Natural Disasters and Other Fantasies

In Natural Disasters and Other Fantasies, Department of Cynical Delight focuses on the residual damage caused by severe weather systems. Specifically, the installations in the show examine images of debris fields created by high-intensity tornadoes in the U.S. With a dark sense of humor, the collaborative duo imagines the commodification of these forms as games, toys, edutainment materials, and art objects.

To unpack the potential of debris field imagery, they looked at it as a visual language and asked questions such as, "What are tornadoes trying to communicate?" “What kinds of stories is it telling?” “Who are its heroes, and who are its villains?” and “How can these language forms be aestheticized and eventually packaged for consumption?”

The work shown here explores these and other questions using drawing, 3D printing, and video. Through a blend of corporate design processes and artistic experimentation, this installation is a project of active listening and resourceful interpretation.
